How to Organize Your Kitchen

December 5, 2016

Do you ever just walk into the kitchen, spend a few minutes looking for those containers or jars and get so frustrated because they were supposed to be in the cabinet under the silverware drawer? And guess what…they’re not even there! Or maybe you open the cabinet to grab a plate and all the cups come crashing down? Or you decide to start making that five cheese lasagna you saw on Tasty, but can’t find any ingredients in the craziness of your pantry? If this sounds anything like you, read on to see some of the tips on how to organize your kitchen that we’ve put together.

1. Install Shelves to Give Everything A Place

It’s no secret that shelves are a huge help to keeping things organized. You’ve probably watched an episode of House Hunters and saw a nice master closet with shelving installed to keep everything in its place. Same goes for the kitchen. If you really want to organize your kitchen, install shelves inside some of the bigger, empty cabinets and in the pantry. A couple extra shelves never hurt anyone.

2. Use Containers to Keep Things Organized

I love using different containers for different things. If you look in my pantry I’ve got just about everything in containers. I put all my rice in a container and on the shelf. I throw flour in one, sugar in another. The beans? Which ones? I’ve got a container for black beans and one for pinto beans. Containers are one the best ways to organize your kitchen.

3. Use Dividers in Your Drawers

Dividers have been a huge help in keeping my kitchen organized. You probably can’t tell from looking at it on the outside, but if you open any of the drawers, you’ll see dividers in use and helping a ton. We have this one really messy drawer where we keep keys, pens, wallets, oven mitts and extra towels. It’s a weird mix of things in that drawer, but without the divider it would be way worse. You can get them from Walmart or the dollar store. You’ll thank me later, I promise.

4. Hang Hooks for Utensils or Pots and Pans

Hanging things up is a great way to organize your kitchen and free up some space on your countertops. Right now we have a big jar where we throw all the big spoons and spatulas, but I’m putting in hooks this weekend so we can get those off the countertops. I don’t know about you, but I really like clean and open counters. They just make the kitchen feel a little bigger.

Most of these tips are pretty simple, but very effective when it comes time to organize your kitchen. I’m sure even if you implement one a week or one every month you’ll feel a lot more satisfied and less frustrated when you walk in the kitchen. Long gone will be the days that you can’t find anything and it takes 20 minutes just to get everything ready to go just to start making dinner. I got some of these tips from one of my friends over at House Keep App. They provide cleaning services Chicago and do a really great job of it too.
